Sushi Kiraku in Kobe|Craftsmanship and Calm in Sannomiya

Located in Sannomiya, Kobe, Sushi Kiraku is a Japanese sushi restaurant where seasonal seafood, craftsmanship, and a calm atmosphere come together. It is a place we would like to introduce to readers overseas as part of Japan Picks.

Sushi Kiraku is tucked away in Kanocho, slightly north of central Sannomiya. Although it is close to the station, once you step inside, there is a sense of calm that feels a little removed from the energy of the city.

Kobe is a city where the sea and mountains sit close together. Walk a little from Sannomiya, and you can feel the air of the hillside to the north and the openness of the port to the south. Sushi enjoyed in this setting has a different character from sushi in Tokyo. It carries the freshness of the Seto Inland Sea and the warmth of Kansai hospitality.

One of the most memorable details at Sushi Kiraku is that the sense of place is not only found in the fish, but also in the rice. According to the restaurant, the sushi rice is made with vinegar and citrus from different regions of Japan, including mikan from Wakayama, daidai from Yamaguchi, yuzu from Kochi, and sudachi from Tokushima. This use of citrus brings a lightness that gently supports the flavour of the fish.

The seafood is also closely connected to the local waters. The restaurant makes use of fish from Awaji’s hiruami, or daytime catch, and prepares it with careful handling, including ikejime. For visitors to Kobe, this is part of the pleasure of eating sushi here: the closeness of the sea can be felt on the plate.

Sushi is not the only attraction. The restaurant also offers beautifully prepared small dishes, allowing guests to enjoy both sushi and Japanese cuisine in one meal. The space is bright, clean, and relaxed, making it suitable for a meal that feels special without being overly formal.

On our visit, Chablis was available as a white wine pairing for sushi. Its clean, mineral character worked beautifully with the delicate flavours of the fish. Japanese sake and sparkling options were also available, giving guests different ways to enjoy the meal.

The sushi itself has a jewel-box quality. It is photogenic, but not only for the camera. Each piece leaves a sense of satisfaction in the mouth, reminding us that beauty and flavour should belong together.

For travellers visiting Kobe from overseas, Sushi Kiraku offers more than a taste of Japanese sushi. It is also a way to experience Kobe’s sense of distance, its relationship with the Seto Inland Sea, and the quiet generosity of Kansai food culture.

Kobe is both a port city and a city of mountains. To visit a sushi restaurant that has continued in this place is to leave with a small, lasting memory of the journey.

Editor’s Note

Kobe is a city where the sea and mountains are always close, and that sense of place naturally appears in its food.

What stayed with us at Sushi Kiraku was not only the beauty of the fish, but also the citrus used in the sushi rice and the careful work behind the seafood from Awaji. Each plate seemed to bring together the Seto Inland Sea, Kansai flavour, and the relaxed elegance of Kobe.

We chose to introduce Sushi Kiraku as part of Japan Picks because it offers overseas readers a glimpse of Japanese food culture through the lens of Kobe.
