From Andy Warhol to Anish Kapoor, international art is heading to Doha. But the story goes far beyond the arrival of celebrated names.

For decades, the global art world has been closely associated with cities such as New York, London, Paris and Basel, Switzerland.

Now, another city is establishing its place on that cultural map: Doha, the capital of Qatar.

Art Basel has announced the exhibitors for the second edition of Art Basel Qatar, taking place from 28 to 30 January 2027.

The fair will bring together 82 galleries from 37 countries and territories, presenting 80 solo-artist exhibitions.

Yet the significance of this announcement goes beyond the number of participating galleries.

Art Basel Qatar is not simply bringing international art to the Middle East. It is creating a platform through which artistic voices from the region can engage with, and contribute to, the global art conversation.

Andy Warhol Meets a New Generation of Artistic Voices

The 2027 edition will feature works by internationally recognised artists alongside those whose practices are rooted in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA).

Acquavella Galleries will present works by Andy Warhol, Gagosian will feature Maurizio Cattelan, and Lisson Gallery will showcase Anish Kapoor.

Other notable presentations include Park Seo-Bo with White Cube, Lucio Fontana with Tornabuoni Art, and Rirkrit Tiravanija with neugerriemschneider.

At the same time, approximately half of the participating artists come from the MENASA region, while more than a third of the galleries operate spaces in the region.

Among the featured artists are Monira Al Qadiri, Dana Awartani, Shahzia Sikander, Yazan Khalili and Vian Sora.

This combination is what makes the upcoming edition particularly interesting.

Rather than presenting Western art to a Middle Eastern audience, the fair creates opportunities for different artistic traditions, perspectives and histories to meet on equal ground.

It also offers regional artists greater visibility within an international network of galleries, collectors and cultural institutions.

Who Defines the Global Art World?

The curatorial theme for Art Basel Qatar 2027 is between / بين.

Conceived under the artistic direction of Iraqi curator Wassan Al-Khudhairi, the theme explores the space where different cultures, generations, histories and perspectives intersect.

Art does not always belong neatly within national or cultural boundaries.

A single work may carry meanings that resonate differently with people from different backgrounds. Its significance can evolve as it moves between places, audiences and generations.

In this sense, between is more than an exhibition theme.

It offers a way of reconsidering how artistic influence moves around the world.

For many years, international recognition has often been shaped by institutions, galleries and markets based in Europe and North America.

Art Basel Qatar introduces another perspective: the MENASA region is not simply receiving international artistic influences but has its own histories, ideas and creative practices that contribute to global culture.

Qatar Is Not Only Investing in Art. It Is Investing in Future Collectors.

One of the most interesting developments announced alongside the 2027 exhibitor list is a new initiative called Collectors Majlis.

Launching in October 2026, the invitation-only pilot programme will bring together approximately 30 to 40 emerging and prospective collectors.

Through masterclasses, workshops, cultural experiences and visits to collections, participants will learn how the art market operates, how artworks are bought and sold, and how private collections are developed.

The programme will involve leading figures from the international art community, including Her Excellency Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, and Noah Horowitz, CEO of Art Basel.

This initiative reveals an important aspect of the fair's long-term ambition.

Establishing an art market requires more than bringing prestigious galleries and celebrated works to a city.

It also requires people who understand art, recognise its cultural significance and are willing to support artists and institutions over time.

By investing in education and collector engagement, Art Basel Qatar aims to strengthen the foundations of a sustainable regional art market.

The fair is therefore evolving beyond a three-day event into a platform for cultural exchange and long-term relationships.

A New Reason to Visit Doha

Art Basel Qatar 2027 will take place in Msheireb Downtown Doha, with exhibitions centred around M7 and Doha Design District, as well as selected public spaces.

Rather than being confined to a conventional exhibition hall, the fair will extend into the surrounding urban environment.

For visitors, this offers an opportunity to experience contemporary art within the architectural and cultural landscape of Doha itself.

Qatar is already associated with distinctive architecture, luxury hospitality and desert landscapes.

Now, contemporary art is becoming another reason to explore the destination.

A journey to Doha could offer more than a visit to an international art fair. It could become an opportunity to encounter artistic perspectives shaped by histories and cultures that are not always prominently represented in familiar Western institutions.

Where Will the Art World Go Next?

New York, London, Paris and Basel remain influential centres of the international art market.

But the geography of contemporary art is expanding.

Through its growing network of regional galleries, international participants and year-round initiatives, Art Basel Qatar is seeking to establish Doha as a lasting meeting point for artists, collectors and cultural institutions.

The 2027 edition will offer an early indication of how that ambition is developing.

As the global art world continues to evolve, Doha is becoming a city worth watching.

And for travellers interested in art, architecture and cultural experiences, it may be a destination worth experiencing for themselves.
