Bellwald is a mountain village in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. As soon as you enter this high-altitude village, the air feels different. Snow still rests on the mountains, water runs through the rocky landscape, and the sky opens wide above you. This is not the kind of trip where you rush from one tourist spot to another. Bellwald offers a slower kind of time — one that gently brings your body back to its natural pace.
During our stay, we visited Hotel Zur Alten Gasse / The Onya Resort & Spa in Bellwald. With mountain views, a spa, and restaurant dining all in one place, it is a very Swiss alpine resort experience.
The Onya Resort & Spa has a wellness area with a pool, sauna, steam bath, fitness room, and massage rooms. Guests staying at the adjacent Hotel Zur Alten Gasse can also use the spa facilities. Bellwald Tourism also introduces The Onya Resort & Spa as having a 300-square-metre wellness area, which is available not only to guests of The Onya, but also to those staying at its sister hotel, Zur Alten Gasse.
A Spa Children Can Enjoy, and a Chocolate Massage

What made The Onya Resort & Spa especially memorable was that the spa experience was not only designed for adults. Children can enjoy it too.
When we think of a Swiss mountain resort, many of us may imagine a quiet holiday made for adults. Here, however, it is easy to create a wellness moment that the whole family can share. Children can move their bodies in the pool, warm up in the sauna or relaxation area, and, if desired, enjoy a massage treatment. For children, a spa experience while travelling can become a very special memory.
One treatment I would especially recommend is the chocolate massage. The word “chocolate” feels familiar and inviting, which makes it an easy first step into the world of spa treatments. This is not simply a place where adults rest quietly. Children can also take part in the joy of the trip, which makes it a lovely point for families staying in Bellwald.
Dining at Zur Alten Gasse on a Bellwald Evening
After walking in the mountains, your body can feel colder than you expect. You walk over rocky paths, listen to the sound of waterfalls, and look up at snow-covered peaks. Time spent in nature is beautiful, but it also leaves a real sense of tiredness in your legs and back.
Returning to the hotel and warming the body in the pool and spa is one of the great pleasures of staying in Bellwald.
Dinner is served at the hotel’s restaurant, Zur Alten Gasse. Cheese, bread, meat dishes, rösti, vegetables, and dessert — the meal offers more than just visual elegance. There is a deep sense of satisfaction that comes from eating this kind of food in the mountains.
Bellwald Tourism introduces the restaurant at Zur Alten Gasse as a Gault Millau-rated restaurant, and also mentions its cuisine paired with wines from Valais.
What stayed with me most was that, while it was proper hotel dining, the meal did not feel heavy or tiring. The richness of the sauces, the vegetables served on the side, the crisp aroma of the rösti, and the pleasure of cheese and dessert all came together naturally.
With each plate, you can feel why it is worth sitting down for a meal in the Swiss mountains.
Bellwald Is Best Reached by Car for a Family Trip
If you are planning to visit Bellwald, I would recommend travelling by car. It is possible to reach the village by public transport, but when travelling with children, carrying luggage, walking in the mountains, or moving around the surrounding area, having a car makes the stay much easier.
Bellwald Tourism also provides access information for both car and public transport. In reality, however, because this is a mountain resort, it is wise to plan your transportation carefully before your stay.
Bellwald is one of Switzerland’s lesser-known mountain resorts.
Unlike a trip where you move from one major sightseeing spot to another, Bellwald allows families to enjoy mountain scenery, spa time, and good food at a slower pace. For anyone looking to spend a special moment in the Swiss Alps, it is a place well worth visiting.
In the morning, you can look out at the mountains. During the day, you can walk through nature. In the evening, you can warm your body in the spa. Children can enjoy the pool and chocolate massage, while adults take a quiet break in the sauna or over dinner. At night, the restaurant offers Swiss-style dishes and Valais wines.
This is not a trip about filling every hour with famous sights. It is a journey that helps the whole family feel lighter in body and mind. Bellwald has everything you need for a wellness stay in the Swiss mountains.

Editor’s Note
When travelling with children, the stay feels different when wellness is not only something for adults, but also something children can experience in their own way. A moment to care for the body while away from home can become part of the journey itself.
The mountains of Bellwald, the warmth of the spa, and a thoughtful meal at the end of the day — it was not a flashy kind of trip, but a Swiss wellness stay that left a gentle and lasting memory for the whole family.
