A Luxury Safari Stay at Mhondoro in South Africa

A safari in South Africa is no longer simply about seeing wildlife.

Less than three hours by road from Johannesburg, Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa is a five-star lodge located in Welgevonden Game Reserve in South Africa’s Limpopo Province, offering a luxurious stay surrounded by nature.
The 36,000-hectare reserve is home to the Big Five — lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant — as well as more than 50 species of mammals, around 2,000 plant species and 350 bird species. The reserve is malaria-free, and Mhondoro sits within this protected natural environment.
Where African Chic Meets European Sensibility
Mhondoro’s interiors combine distinctly African textures with a refined European aesthetic. Designed by Dutch owner and interior designer Myriam Vogel, the lodge features spacious decks and guest rooms with views over the surrounding landscape.
The lodge accommodates just 24 guests in total.
Alongside the two-bedroom Executive Suite and Family Suites, many of the guest suites feature private heated plunge pools. The Honeymoon Suite includes its own spa pool and private deck overlooking the waterhole.
Set apart from the main lodge, Mhondoro Villa is designed for families and groups of friends travelling together. It features three bedrooms, a private gym, a massage room and a heated swimming pool. Exclusive-use stays also include a dedicated safari vehicle with a private ranger, as well as the services of a chef, butler and housekeeping staff.
Watching Wild Elephants from Underground
One of Mhondoro’s signature features is its underground game-viewing hide, built beside the waterhole.
Connected to the main lodge by a tunnel, it allows guests to observe and photograph elephants and other wildlife from close to ground level as they come to drink.
Accessible both day and night, the hide offers a very different perspective from viewing wildlife from a safari vehicle, bringing guests remarkably close to the animals in their natural surroundings.
Mhondoro has also gained attention on social media for scenes of wild elephants stopping by the lodge’s eco-friendly swimming pool for a drink, a phenomenon that became known through the hashtag #poolellie .
Dining in the Heart of the Safari Experience
Food is also an important part of the experience at Mhondoro.
The culinary offering features menus inspired by Luke Dale Roberts, one of South Africa’s leading chefs, with multi-course dining, wine pairings and curated cocktails.
Near the entrance to the reserve, the Reception & Welcome Lounge is home to an Eco-Farm, which produces organic vegetables and free-range eggs for the lodge. Guests can tour the farm, pick fresh herbs and vegetables, and then enjoy a welcome lunch featuring ingredients grown on site.
Self-Sufficient Energy in Nature
For luxury hotels, finding ways to coexist with the natural environment has become an increasingly important consideration.
At Mhondoro, a range of initiatives are in place to reduce the lodge’s environmental impact, including waste recycling. Its solar power installation enables the lodge to operate off-grid, generating enough electricity to meet its own power needs.
The spa also features a private outdoor deck and spa bath, where guests can enjoy treatments while overlooking the reserve.
A New Chapter in 2027: The Southern Residence
Mhondoro is also set to introduce a new accommodation experience in 2027: The Southern Residence.
Located in the southern part of Welgevonden, it will be available for exclusive use by a single group of up to eight guests. Overlooking the Sterkstroom Valley and one of the reserve’s active watering points, the residence will offer expansive views of the surrounding landscape from its spacious private deck.
During their stay, guests will be looked after by a private team including a chef, butler and ranger.
Rather than the scale of a large resort, the experience is designed around a more intimate form of luxury, allowing a small group to immerse themselves more deeply in the surrounding nature.

Mhondoro is approximately 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours by car from O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
As the lodge is located within Welgevonden Game Reserve, guests do not drive directly to the lodge as they would to a conventional hotel. Instead, they arrive at the designated reception area or reserve gate, where onward transfer is arranged by the lodge.
According to the lodge’s official information, the journey from the gate to Mhondoro takes approximately one hour by ranger vehicle.
